A new format for the view, NALC updates and resources, upcoming courses

Dear Colleagues,

This morning, we will find out who our new Ward Councillors are at Milton Keynes City Council. It will be interesting to see whether holding the vote in a shopping centre encouraged higher turnout — and perhaps whether the nearby coffee shops benefited from the extra footfall, although parking charges may have dampened enthusiasm for some! Perhaps that’s something to consider for next time.

This week we are also trying a slightly different format for this update. I would welcome your feedback on whether this feels clearer and reaches a wider audience, or whether it risks becoming just another news roundup. I have always written these updates as if in conversation with you — a habit that dates to COVID — so it may be time for a refresh. Please do let me know what you think.

Council Emails and Websites

County Officers recently heard from the Parish Council Domain Helper Service, who outlined the continued success of parish and town councils moving to .gov.uk domain names, supported in part by the Assertion 10 AGAR requirement.

We recognise that this transition has not been straightforward for all councils. The team would welcome hearing from those who have experienced challenges — whether your move is complete or still in progress.

If you are willing to share your experience, please email me with the subject DOMAINS and :

  • the name of your domain registrar
  • a brief summary of your experience so far
  • where you are currently up to and what your next steps are

This information will help shape further guidance and support for members.

NALC Updates and Resources

Political and Parliamentary Engagement

  • NALC has responded to the government consultation on proposals requiring Local Planning Authorities to consult the Secretary of State on certain planning applications. The response urges a locally led approach to planning thresholds and referrals (available on the NALC website).
  • As part of the Digital Democracy Partnership, NALC has written to government highlighting the need to prioritise legislation on remote attendance at council meetings and reform of the councillor standards regime.
  • This week’s NALC blog explores how parish and town councils can use AI to support effective working.
