A challenge for Councillors is that they are also employers, and for a number of people coming into this role this is a new responsibility to them. Being an employer comes with a whole host of things that you need to know and do – many of which are legal requirements. This short programme has been designed to help Councillors to understand the rights of employees, the duties of employers and the laws that impact these.
This programme will be interactive with a mix of teaching, tutor-led discussion and group activity.
The learning outcomes are:
- to understand the rights that employees legally have
- to understand the obligations of employers
- to understand the legal and HR implications
- to understand the role of Acas
- to gain an appreciation of their role in ensuring employees are being treated correctly
We will examine the Employment Rights Act 1996 as a key part of the programme as this drives the foundations of what employers must legally do to support their employees.
We will also touch on:
- the National Minimum Wage Act 1998
- the Employment Relations Act 1999
- the Maternity and Parental Leave etc. Regulations 1999
- the Part-Time Workers (Prevention of Less Favourable Treatment) Regulations 2000
- Agency Workers Regulations 2010
- The Acas Codes of Practice
This programme is not aimed at making anyone a legal expert, just to raise awareness of what legislation exists and how to make sure you are abiding by it. As well as keeping you legal it will also help you to have more motivated, happier and productive employees.
Running time: 2 hours approximately depending on Q&A
Who should attend: Suitable for both Councillors and Officers
Remote access: Zoom joining instructions will be issued closer to the time
