NALC Free LGA Webinars for Councillors, AGAR deadline, Elections Toolkit for Members

Dear Colleagues

It has been a busy week at BMKALC with four training courses, Councillor’s essentials session 2 and 3, Clerks Induction and CiLCA Unit 2 for Group 1.  You should all have been very busy finalising your AGAR’s.  The deadline is the end of June for submission and remember if you are not required by law to undertake a full Assurance, make sure you have applied for your exemption certificate!

I wanted to highlight two free virtual sessions from the LGA, which are open to councillors from local councils. Personal safety for newly-elected councillors – 10 July from 2.00 pm – 3.40 pm has been specially devised for newly or recently elected councillors who are keen to improve their awareness of personal safety. The session is full of practical advice and guidance and includes advice on surgeries, canvassing, home visits and managing unexpected doorstep visitors. The promo code for this webinar has been circulated to members under separate cover . And Handling online abuse and intimidation for newly-elected councillors – 23 July from 2.00 pm – 3.30 pm will provide attendees with an awareness of the steps that can be taken to manage trolls and cyber-bullies, including a gentle introduction to the legal framework around social media posts. There will be guidance on being safe online and tips on creating a positive online presence. The promo code for this session has also been circulated to members under separate cover. Many thanks to NALC for bringing these to my attention there are more sessions planned for the Autumn, we’ll let you know as they are announced.

We’re still getting queries in about not just the impending elections but also those planning towards the Buckinghamshire elections next May.  To help you’ll now see a hot link the the Elections Toolkit . You will need your BMKALC website login to access it, but it is a superb resource and I think you will find it incredibly useful.

Next week we look forward to CiLCA Group 2 day in the hot seat and also the first of two sell out Chairing Skills sessions.  These are all in person events and I’m very much looking forward to welcoming you in Judges Lodgings where you will be able to meet and speak with fellow clerks and councillor’s from around the county.  Keep an eye on the website, new courses are available regularly and don’t forget if you notice a course on a neighbouring CALC’s site which you would like us to attend, let us know.  We work closely with a number of CALC’s and honour members rates for each others member councils.  We have hosted candidates from Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire, Hertfordshire and will soon be welcoming someone from Norfolk!

Hopefully weather this weekend will allow you to leave those seat cushions outside for a whole day!  We wish you a fabulous weekend and look forward to speaking with you next week.

Kind regards

Mel and Lorraine
