Councillor Essentials builds on the basic training when you first joined the council. This newly developed training course content comprises of three individual modules, each delivered over 90 minutes sessions (with the exception of the last module General Data Protection which has a running time of 120 mins) held over three consecutive weeks and forms part of our member council programme Professional Pathways for Councillors.
Session 1 (90 minutes) will provide details of the Governance Framework in which Local Councils operate. We will look at key policy documents and protocols, and examples of council organisation.
Session 2 (90 minutes) is where we will examine and understand the Key Roles and Responsibilities within a council, the role of the Code of Conduct and our relationship with the Principal Authority Monitoring Officers, how we use delegated authorities and our responsibilities as Councillors under the Employment Act.
Session 3 (120 minutes) will examine Council’s statutory duties under the General Data Protection Act and adhering to the law when managing data, the actions to take when faced with Freedom of Information Requests or Subject Access Requests and the role of the Information Commissioners Office.
Suitability: New councillors, those returning to the role of councillor, or those interested in a knowledge base refresher
Cancellation: A full refund will be given if 14 days or more notice prior to the date of the training course is given. However, this could cause an event to be cancelled if it becomes uneconomic to run.
